Rotenone


Rotenone is an organic compound with the formula C23H22O6. It is found in the roots of the legume genus produced in tropical and subtropical Asia, and also in some Chinese herbs such as the seed of the melon, the bitter sandalwood, and the root of the Kunming spatholoba. Almost insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, ether and many other organic solvents. It decomposes when exposed to light and air. Its solution in organic solvents is colorless, and when it is exposed to air, it is oxidized, turning yellow, orange, and then dark red, and can precipitate dehydrorotenone and rotenedione crystals, which are toxic to insects.
